Like many artists, still lifes were a great way for Art to explore differences in lighting, material and reflections.
This painting was designed as an exercise in reflections. The reflections were created by hanging sheets of colorful cellophane in front of a spotlight lamp pointed towards the still life scene. The still life items were staged on the kitchen table, which did not have the depicted color or reflective properties. Dad created that effect from his imagination. Many of his backgrounds and supporting items were created from his imagination.

This was one of the few paintings not based on a photograph or imagination, but on a live staged scene (though as with many of the paintings, the surface and background elements were created from imagination). There are a lot of shiny copper pieces (my mother was fond of collecting copper) to make interesting reflections, as well as some glass pieces and tableware. The blue willow and hunting scene dishes belonged to our next door neighbors. Everything was set up on a table in the tiny bedroom dad used as a studio. We kids were not to go in there or touch anything (which was ever so tempting). This went on for many months. Our neighbors were happy to finally get their dishes back!
